My dear boy,

I should be very cross with you for spending such a lot of money on that beautiful flower for my father’s “day of honour”? But still it’s marvellous really awfully nice and all the flowers make our rooms look beautiful. My father enjoyed his jubilee very much indeed. All the postmen were standing in a row when father appeared and his desk and chair and the doors and pictures in his room were all ornamented with green stuff and with flowers. It was simply touching.

Lieber Junge,

soeben habe ich bei Frau Hornig die Neuigkeiten im Kollegium erfahren. Demnach sind Copper, Schmidt, Helling und Ernst abgebaut mit 75 % der zuständigen Pension. Sonneborn und Albing werden strafversetzt. Dies alles ist amtlich richtig! Für die hiesige Schule sind 3 neue Herren (Assessoren) angefordert worden – in Münster. Da nun an der hiesigen Schule immer 1 Mathematiker zu wenig war, lässt Dir Mucki raten, doch einmal sofort nach Münster zu fahren und Dich dort persönlich in Erinnerung zu bringen. Nur persönliche Vorstellung wäre erwünscht, keine Fürsprache.

Schwelm, 1^st May 1933.

My dear boy,

I have just heared [sic] on the wireless Adolf Hitler’s speech and the communications about the firework at the Tempelhofer Feld. I think you have been listening in just the same.

Thanks very much for your nice letter and your mother’s invitation. I am very sorry but I cannot stay till Monday night. I think you have forgotten that it’s my fathers’s jubilee on Monday and of course I have to be back for this very important day. If it would be suitable I could arrive sometime on Saturday but I’ll leave that to you and to your mother; I know that Saturday is always a very busy day for housewives.

Anneliese hat als Absendeadresse auf diesem Brief nicht mehr “Schulstraße 48″ angegeben, sondern “Josef Wagnerstr. 48″. Die Schulstraße in Schwelm wurde offenbar nach Josef Wagner umbenannt.

My dear, dear boy,

it is a pity that I cannot come to give this letter to you and to have a little talk with you. I miss you very much but I know that it has to be and it is very nice to know that we shall see each other again very soon. I have not looked yet at the time-table but I shall let you know before by what train I shall arrive.

Ihr Lieben in Schwelm,

nun stehen die Koffer fertig gepackt. Es hat etwas schwer gehalten, all die angesammelten Kleinodien darin unterzubringen. In 3 Stunden wird Mr. Cox uns zum Schiff fahren. Das Wetter ist trocken und ziemlich kalt; zum Glück hat sich der Wind gelegt und so hoffen wir auf eine einigermaßen ruhige Überfahrt.
