My dear Anneliese,

I am sure you will have been thinking that I am very rude for not having answered your letters until now, but I do hope you will forgive me.

First of all please let me congratulate you on your engagement, and wish you happiness too. I am told that in Germany this is much more solemn and serious than in my country, but, of course, it all means the same thing in the end.
