I wonder if I am forgiven for being so long in writing to you. Time flies as quickly one does not realize how the weeks go.

What a very busy person you are now. Have you learnt to hammer a nail? & to saw a log of wood? Don’t forget that whatever you do – I should imagine the nursing was very interesting, I have always liked it myself.

I received your last letter the other day and am answering it now because I am again in bed, this time with an extremely bad attack of tonsilitis. The first day when it was feeling sore and people said what was the matter with it I said nothing. The next day I felt like Vesuvius in action and I told them I was keeping a frog in it, the 3^rd night they told sister will it east [?] all together.

Dear Frau Merten,

thank you very much indeed for your very sweet gift. Anneliese is being “the postman” for me so that she can translate this into German as my German consists of “Ja” & “Nien” [sic] – I am very sad at Anneliese leaving me. We have been very happy & she has been so sweet with Christopher who will miss her terribly. Walter has been lucky in the weather for his holiday here – one wet day & not a very bad one at that. He looks much better for the change & rest. My husband & I send you our kindest regards.
