So 09.07.1933, Brief von Janet an Anneliese: “I am moving heaven and earth and a few other planets”
Poststempel: Leeds, JLY 9, 9 PM
The General Infirmary at Leeds
Saturday [08.07.]
My Dear Mona Lisa,
I received your last letter the other day and am answering it now because I am again in bed, this time with an extremely bad attack of tonsilitis. The first day when it was feeling sore and people said what was the matter with it I said nothing. The next day I felt like Vesuvius in action and I told them I was keeping a frog in it, the 3rd night they told sister will it east [?] all together.
Do be a darling ant sit down now & write & tell me all about it by return of post.
Is it difficult; do you think I shall get lost? I think I will label myself carefully & come through the post.
I am longing to see you again. Please give my love to your family.
My brother says he thinks you can’t know me well if you want to see me again and he sent me to bed.
Dr Heller [?] (the one you helped me to write the German letter to) is away. So Dr Garland came and ordered me a gargle that you gargle and swallow. It tastes like sea water & feels just like going under when you are bathing.
About coming to Germany, I am moving heaven and earth and a few other planets, including Jupiter, Saturn and Mars. I would love to. I want you to tell me all about it. Just what happens about the crossing, and when we have crossed there is a train journey. How much so soon.
Ronnie is very well, I saw him the other day, he is very sweet.
Good bye, dear
Heaps of love, write by return won’t you?
Janet.
P.S If I come it will be in September. Do you know any one crossing then? You see the only German I know is how to talk about rheumatism and bread. Helpfull ain’t it?
P.P.S Sunday [09.07.]
As this letter was not posted yesterday I thought I would write a little more. When I get up I am going to make all enquiries about coming to you for my holidays. I get approximately 3 weeks. I think it will be the last 3 weeks in September. Do please write and give me struck instructions won’t you.
You see if I can’t talk to people to ask them things I shall be in the soup.
Dr Garland won’t let me get up today, if he doesn’t let me tomorrow there will be a gory murder in Room 6 the Stabler’s Home.
People still call me Anna May Wong, I will send you a snap so that you may judge for yourself.
Did I tell you that I was on night-duty on the men’s surgical ward. We have been dreadfully busy and now when it is not our turn to take in accidents and we have a breathing space, I am in bed.
Ronnie and John (his friend) and I went boating on the lake at Roundhay. It was lovely, John is a very nice person. Nearly as nice as Ronnie. We all went up to be with Mellis’s, some doctor friends of mine. John stole my handkerchief and kept it, wasn’t it dreadful. I argued with him but it was no use.
He and Ronnie are going to Ilfracombe for their holidays a rather part of them.
It is very difficult to meet Ronnie when I am on night duty, where silly people don’t understand how impossible it is to be late. I only have from 5 in the evening until 8. Not very long is it?
My brother is at home and I showed him a snap of you. He thinks you are a very pretty girl.
I am looking forward to seeing you and your family, and meeting all your friends. I wish you could come to Leeds. There are some very nice people here who I would like you to meet.
How would you like to marry a doctor? I hope you would not become like Mrs. Andrade.
With love from
Janet

Janet scheint ja eine etwas skurrile Dame zu sein. Im Brieftext fallen zwei Merkwürdigkeiten auf. Am Anfang heißt es “will it east all together”, bei pps schreibt sie “whew I get up”.
