So 16.10.1932, Brief von Anneliese an Walter: “It is always good to have much work”

“Burleigh”, Octobre [sic] 16th 1932.

Mein lieber, lieber Junge!

I hope you’ll notice that I am improving because I am answering your nice letter very soon, ain’t I good? Thank you ever so much for the snap, I like it very much and I think it is one of the best you have ever sent to me. I like so much to get snaps of you because I think it makes it a bit easier to bear that I am so awfully far away from you.

I do not know whether you like me to write to you in English or not, you never told me about it. I myself like it much better because I think it is always a good exercise for me and I often think it is wasting time to write letters in German but – of course – I could never think that when writing a letter to my dear Walter!

I was very glad to hear that you have been having a nice time at Schwelm. Oh, I would have loved so much to be together with you even only for a few hours. But I won’t stay in England all my life and I hope the few months till I come back will pass quickly for both of us. It is always good to have much work; I have always plenty to do in the morning and I can learn quite a lot here in England. To tell you the truth I was very sorry myself when I decided to stay in England longer than Xmas but I think I am able to learn so much besides the language that it would be a great pity to return so soon. I really think what I learn when watching people here will be of much use when we both are married because I notice quite a lot which is not right to do and I want to make my Walter very happy. I am always very pleased when the post-man gives me a letter from you and I hope you will write always rather often. You know that I am interested in everything concerning your school, your Silentium, all in all your whole life. How are your mother, your brother and Hedwig? Please give my love to all of them.

And now imagine: I am going up to London with Mr. Cox in the car for 2 days; that is a reward for my working very hard last week and – I must say – I am looking forward to that trip! I like London very much and I think I can sleep at the family where my friend is staying with. On Saturday next – my birthday – we are going to Porthmouth to spend the whole day at Ena’s parents who are very nice. [Notiz am Rande: "No, because we cannot have the car."] You see, I am going to have a very busy week and I am not sorry about it. –

I am glad to hear that my father gave you the enlarged picture of mine for a present because I have not finished my film yet and thus I am not able to send any snaps to you, sorry! I think I shall feel very homesick at Xmas although Ena and Mr. Cox promised to do all they could to make me as happy as possible and I am very afraid of that custom with the mistel-toe, oh I would love you to be there! –

I am glad that you have got that boy to give him lessons, it is very nice for you.

It is now 9 o’clock – nearly 10 o’clock in Germany; what may you be doing now? I am sitting in front of the fire and I must prepare the supper now. We have been having a nice ride in the car this afternoon.

Much love and many, many kisses,

Yours Anneliese.
