Fr 09.09.1932, Brief von Anneliese an Walter: “it isn’t difficult at all to spend this amount here in London”
Kew Garden, 9th Sept. 1932.
My dear Walter!
Thanks ever so much for your letter of the 3rd inst. I am really sorry that you had to wait such a long time for my last letter which you have surely got in the meantime. To-day I am sitting under a platana in Kew Garden and Gerti is gathering interesting flowers for her herbarium. It is awfully pretty in here and we are very lucky with the weather. There is just a big black bird sitting a yard from me and he looks very nice and clever.
It was a long way out and we nearly went to sleep in the tram. But now we are enjoying our afternoon. I would love you to be here and see all the foreign trees and the interesting hot-houses. I have seen ever so much in the last days that I cannot report it all but I will try: I have been in the British Museum and I was quite delighted with all the interesting sculptures and other things. Gerti makes a very good guide, she shows me all the interesting things. Yesterday we had a German meeting at Oxford Corner House. We were 5 Germans, 3 from Schwelm and 2 from Gevelsberg. It was a very nice afternoon and thus we intended to spend the evening together at Strand Corner House where a good band was playing the newest songs. The day before yesterday Mr. Arthur took us in the car to Hyde-Park and Kensington Garden and we had a lovely morning there. I hope we’ll go to-morrow by car to Richmond Park which is supposed to be one of the nicest.
I have to write ever such a lot and besides I have to finish my article as my mother is always asking for it and my uncle wants me badly to send it. I got 15,- M for my last essay and it isn’t difficult at all to spend this amount here in London. There is always so much to be seen and the drives take always so much money. Nevertheless I am enjoying London more and more and I would like so much to stay here till Christmas. I am now waiting for an answer from the family at “Burleigh” and I hope they will be nice people.
My parents are going on their holidays to-morrow for 2 or 3 weeks to stay with my relations at Harsleben near Halberstadt. I hope they will have a nice time and fine weather as they need badly nice impressions after having got those news about Hans’s engagement. What do you think about it? I would like to hear soon from you about it as I was just thinking of spending the next week-end (perhaps Friday – Tuesday) together with my friend Lotte Lüttje at Hollington near Hastings. Gerti is going home on Thursday next and there are cheap return-tickets from Friday to Tuesday. Perhaps another German – a Marburg student – is coming on Thursday to stay with our family. They are really nice people and the do all they can to make us happy.
I am glad to hear that you enjoyed your staying at Schwelm and the rest of your holidays as well. My best thanks for the nice snap taken in Blankenstein; it is one of the best I ever got of you and besides it reminds me of a lovely day at Blankenstein. I haven’t got my prints yet and therefore you must wait for some snaps of me till the next time, I am sorry.
I hope your mother, your sister and brother have had very nice holidays; will you please remember me to all of them.
Much love and lots of kisses
Yours ever
Anneliese
calles Mona-Lisa.
