Mi 27.07.1932, Brief von Anneliese an Walter: “I am not timid any longer”
Newby, July 27th, 1932.
My dear Walter!
Thanks very much for your letter. I’m very glad you write me more often now and thank you very much for correcting my mistakes. I was really glad to see that you are quite well and quiet now. I think it must be to-day that your holidays are beginning and I hope that you’ll have a nice time. When do you intend to go to Schwelm? I would like very much to stay with you and I am so sorry I cannot.
I am now waiting for Betty – the one of the two English girls – as she promised to tell me something about a dancing-party at Scalby at Friday night. I don’t exactly know wether [sic] I’ll go or not. I like the two girls – Cissely and Betty – very much and we play tennis 2 or 3 times a week. Next week we intend to have a drive on a ship in the evening; it is said to be very nice – in case you’ll not become sea-sick. You wanted to hear something about Hedi the German girl who is staying with us. We are getting on much better! She is an only child and very spoiled and very anxious but she is a good-hearted girl and sometimes she helps me. Sometimes we go together to the concert at the “Spa” at Scarborough or to the picture-house but I don’t take her again with me to tennis as she didn’t behave well. And though it is very nice to have somebody to speak german with I think I learn less than before; at the other hand Mrs. Thompson has to speak more and that is very good for me. And as I notice Hedi making such a lot of mistakes I am not timid any longer. –
I am not allowed to use the grammophon by myself as I might spoil the records. “She” always thinks it was me who spoiled the things which are broken – that is very unpleasant. She likes to be very upset and cross and I don’t like her being so. Yesterday I wrote a letter to a lady at Burleigh near Southampton who likes me to come to her’s and stay with her au pair. She is a niece of Mrs. Jeffery at Hollington where Lotte Lüttje is living for about 4 months and she is quite happy there. Naturally it is a risk for me to change but I think it will be the best for me. I don’t exactly know whether she wants me really to live with her but I’ll tell you as soon as I got a letter from her.
With my next letter you’ll get a snap of me taken last week on the sands at Scarborough. What about some snaps of you? You promised to take and to send me some, don’t you remember?
Last week I went for a walk with Rose a young Swiss girl who is staying at Scalby about 10 minutes from here. We walked through the moores [sic] for about 5 hours and it was lovely there and listen: we always spoke English.
I’ll learn know [sic] some words – it is nearly 10 o’clock. I Hope your mother and brother and sister are well?
Much love and many kisses
from Anneliese.
