Fr 15.07.1932, Brief von Anneliese an Walter: “I could not help thinking of Germany”

15^th July, 1932.

Mein lieber Junge!

Thanks so much for your letter received this morning! I’m now writing downstairs in the drawing-room. Mrs. Thompson is upstairs teaching the german girl who arrived yesterday evening. She only understands a very few words of english – that’s rather funny. I’ve always to translate what Mrs. Th. wishes to tell her. She is a very fashionable young girl but – I think she’ll not be very nice. She intends to stay here for 2 or 3 months. I don’t know whether we both will get on or not.The 5 days Mrs. Thompson was away were very nice. We’ve been on the sands nearly every day and all was better and nicer – even the children! Mr. Th. is a very noble man, I think you would like him. He spoke very often to me when his wife was in Settle and played all the records I liked on the grammophon. So it was on Sunday evening when he played the IX. Synphonie by Beethoven; but I could not help thinking of Germany and your visit to Schwelm. I should have liked to be with you all day long – but the day here was very nice and happy too.

Now it’s 12 o’clock in the night and I’ll finish this letter. This afternoon I had to mend Brenda’s frock therefore I could not continue writing the letter. I’ve been playing tennis with 2 very pretty english girls of 16 and 21 years for nearly 2 ½ hours. To-morrow evening we shall go to the pictures at Scarborough. Perhaps the german girl – Hedi – will go with uns but she was very upset to-day on the tennis-court when we stopped playing for about half an hour as 2 gentlemen were waiting. She went home and that is why the both english girls and I don’t love her. I’m so happy that I got to know these 2 girls.

Und nun noch etwas deutsch, mein lb. Junge. Entschuldige die Fehler, hoffentlich kannst Du die Schrift entziffern, ich schreibe nämlich hier im Bett. Also mit Dr. Thompson habe ich mich neulich über philosophische Dinge unterhalten, d. h. er hat natürlich meist gesprochen. Da waren natürlich immer einige Worte, die ich nicht verstand, aber den Sinn erfasste ich doch. Und dann habe ich die IX. und V. Synfonie von Beethoven und allerhand von Schubert gehört, fein! Nun ist der alte Drache wieder da. Heute hat sie mir wieder versichert, daß ich für sie eigentlich zu nichts nütze sei, das ist sehr angenehm! Ich will erst noch etwas hier bleiben; ich habe jetzt die 2 engl. Mädels, mit denen ich oft zusammen komme. Frl. Lüttje (in Südengland) sucht für mich zum 1. 9. oder 1. 10. etwas anderes. Ich denke, es ist auf alle Fälle ganz gut, wenn man die Familie einmal wechselt. Ob ich es allerdings besser bekomme, fragt sich, aber die Hauptsache ist ja das Lernen, nicht wahr?

Also in Schwelm war es schön? Ich hoffe, Dir mit den Bildern eine kl. Freude machen zu können, die vorhergehenden waren mir nicht schön genug für Dich! Und nun mach mir bitte bald die Freude und schick mir einen Brief, ja mein Junge? Wie geht es Deiner lb. Mutter? Und was sagten meine Eltern über mich??? Ich hoffe, daß Du einige schöne Ferientage i. S. verleben wirst, hoffentlich später auch einmal, wenn ich wieder da bin.
